An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible
Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns into an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.
Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're...family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.
No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

Launching the Thunder Road series, McGarry (Breaking the Rules) takes her signature brand of dramatic YA romances to the edgy world of motorcycle clubs. Seventeen-year-old Emily barely knows her biological father until circumstances force her to spend the summer with him in the small town of Snowflake, Ky. There, she becomes immersed in biker cultureâher father is a high-ranking member of the Reign of Terror, a club that claims to emphasize family and legitimacy over crime and violence. As things heat up with a rival group, Emily is assigned protection: Oz, a sexy guy who has long dreamed of joining the Reign. If he keeps Emily out of trouble, he's in. Opposites attract, and steamy chemistry overrides common sense, leading to an illicit romance that won't end well if their parents find out. The core relationship sizzles and sparks with every glance and touch, and the underlying plot is solid. However, much of the story revolves around the deliberate and frustrating withholding of vital information from a clueless Emily, instead of straightforward answers. Ages 14âup. The audio experience gives listeners greater insight into 17-year-old Emily and 18-year-old Oz's rocky romance. Emily is the estranged daughter of "Kentucky Reign of Terror" biker Eli, and Oz is her club-assigned bodyguard. Narrator Marguerite Gavin contrasts Emily's dauntless exterior with her fear of the dark and frustration over family secrets. Narrator Sean Pratt's older voice seems an odd match for a teenager until we hear Oz's protective nature and old-soul maturity in action. Pratt's steady drawl lends credence to Oz's aspirations to join the biker gang and commit to Emily. The author uses many asides, which are difficult to differentiate from spoken dialogue on the audio. But Gavin's and Pratt's narrations illuminate Emily's and Oz's true natures just as the teens ferret out hidden truths in the twisty workings of biker culture. C.A. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine

Gr 9 Up-Emily's world is just the way she thinks she wants it to be...calm, normal, and filled with the love of her mother and stepfather. She denies an interest in Eli's world, her biological father, who is an important member of the Reign of Terror motorcycle gang. While she does seem to have some questions about Eli, Emily doesn't want to explore her dad's world in any depth. When her parents tell her she will be attending Eli's mother's wake, she is not thrilled, but agrees to go. There, she is thrown into a world of feuding motorcycle gangs, family secrets, and complicated feelings for a young man named Oz. One quick visit turns into an extended trip as the teen tries to unravel the mysteries of her parents' pasts, learning her place in two communities, and investigating her growing feelings for Oz. Emily starts to discover there may be more to life than her protected version. McGarry adeptly splits the narrative between the two protagonists and creates a story that readers will not want to put down. VERDICT This novel will be enjoyed by teens looking for a romantic and thrilling escape.-Jessica Strefling, Pepperdine School of Law Library, CA

Grades 9-12 The bad boy and the good girl are staples of romantic fiction, and with feuding motorcycle gangs and secret family histories added in, McGarry has a solid basis for sizzling drama. Emily is a bundle of nerves after a traumatic childhood, and she prefers a safe, predictable life far from Eliher biological father and a member of the Reign of Terror, a motorcycle club that provides security for truckers. Despite her mother's aversion to her biker past, they attend the funeral of Eli's mother. When a rival club tries to snatch Emily, she is brought into the inner circle for protection and soon realizes her mother and Eli have kept secrets from her. Oz, romantic-interest-to-be, is assigned to guard Emily, but he is prickly over her dismissal of biker culture and of Eli, whom he idolizes. As they fall in love, their world views open to new possibilities. This first in the Thunder Road series has likable characters, brisk pacing, and, of course, plenty of steamy scenes.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
