Her friend and neighbor, Ellie White, starts acting strangely and then confesses to murdering the man, one Threnody McIlwaine, an old friend of Ellie's father and a ruthless corporate raider. Jake is quickly convinced that Ellie is protecting someone--perhaps her vicious mother or her father, who was ruined by McIlwaine--and despite threats to her own well-being continues nosing into the dead man's past. In her polished debut, Graves blends charming, evocative digressions about life in Eastport with an intricate plot, well-drawn characters and a wry sense of humor.

      When Ellie White, longtime resident of Eastport, Maine, confesses to murdering a local billionaire with an ice pick, she's promptly thrown in jail, and Jacobia Tiptree is promptly suspicious. Determined to prove her friend's innocence, Jacobia (Jake) begins making her own inquiries and soon finds herself the object of threats and attacks. In portraying Jake, narrator Lindsay Ellison captures the sardonic tone of a strong, independent woman who is both amused and irritated by human behavior (including her own). Her voicing of Jake's teenage son is realistic, and her portrayal of Ellie's bossy elderly mother is at times hilarious.
