A family brings a most unusual souvenir home after vacation in this classic picture book from the brilliant mind that brought you The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.
The Lazardo family has brought back a peculiar souvenir from their trip to Africa...a dinosaur! Ah, but Bob is the friendly sort of dinosaur. The kind who enjoys playing the trumpet and tossing around a baseball. Bob is an instant neighborhood hit...until his love of chasing cars with his dog pals stirs up trouble with the police for "disturbing the peace." But it's the Pimlico Pirates' opening game and Bob's love of baseball might just be his get-out-of-jail-free card...

From the creator of George Shrinks and illustrator of other books comes a campy extravaganza about the savvy Lazardo family, which, while on vacation in Africa, acquires a dinosaur. Scotty and his sisters, Zelda and Velma, plead to keep him, and their parents agree. Bob, named after Scotty's great-uncle, is happy with the Lazardoshe swims in the morning, plays baseball in the afternoon and sings songs around the campfire at night. But it is soon time to go home to Pimlico Hills, and while Bob is a hit on the ocean liner, his popularity at home diminishes quickly when the police catch him chasing cars. How the Lazardos rescue him incorporates mythic elements of the national pasttime (Bob exhibits great skill at the plate) with a matter-of-fact telling. Joyce's dinosaur is gargantuan yet unthreatening, rendered in an illustrational style reminiscent of 1920s magazine advertising. Surprising juxtapositions of scale enliven the drawings, and many employ unorthodox aerial perspectives. Joyce's is a world of light-drenched, chiseled-edge landscapes and brooding night scenes in which active crosshatchings bring shadows to life. Ages 4-8.

Who says there's no improving on success? Not funnyman author-illustrator William Joyce, who has just added 16 pages of mirth to Dinosaur Bob: And His Adventures with the Family Lazardo (HarperCollins/Geringer, $16, 48p, ages 4-8 ISBN 0-06-021074-5). This expanded version of the popular tale (originally published in 1988) even includes a song: ``The Ballad of Dinosaur Bob,'' sung to the tune of ``Auld Lang Syne.'' Can the music video be far behind?
