When her adorable baby brother is replaced by an ugly, ill-tempered changeling, Mollie is determined to find the so-called Kinde Folke who took baby Thomas, return the changeling she calls Guest, and make them give Thomas back. Natural and magical obstacles and her own reckless temperament make her journey arduous and full of dangers, and a plot rich in surprises and twists makes this book a must-listen for Mary Downing Hahn's fans.

Narrator Shelley Atkinson's Irish accent complements this magical folktale featuring a strong-willed girl and a changeling child. Molly Cloverall's inattentiveness allows the misnamed Kinde Folke to snatch her baby brother and leave a screaming, hideous changeling in his place. The family names the repulsive changeling Guest, hoping he won't stay. Atkinson's tone matches Molly's mood--impatient, resentful, and defensive--as she refuses to acknowledge that she is at fault and blames Guest for their troubles. Impulsively, Molly strikes out with Guest to find the malicious Kinde Folke, hoping to exchange him for her brother. As Guest learns to speak, his voice is raspy and high, but not unpleasant. Atkinson later moderates Molly's tone as she receives Guest's unwavering attempts to help her as they encounter perilous lands fraught with magic and danger. L.T. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine

In a striking departure from her more familiar ghost stories, Hahn (The Girl in the Locked Room) draws from Irish folklore to tell a darkly haunting tale. Mollie has grown up in a comfortable home in a village guarded by chilling superstitions. Local legends warn of the Kinde Folke, beings known to steal human babies and replace them with vile changelings. When Mollie removes her baby brother’s protective necklace given to him by Granny Hedgepath, who is rumored to be a witch, Thomas promptly disappears, and a goblinlike creature is left in his place. Mollie leaves the village with the changeling child, whom she names “Guest,” in hopes of finding the elusive Kinde Folke and pleading with them to exchange Guest for Thomas. Hahn blends sinister magic and unexpected tenderness as Mollie’s relationship with the changeling child—who grows at a preternatural rate, quickly learning to walk and talk—evolves from spiteful to sympathetic and, finally, to loving and protective. Magical forces and frightening figures lurk throughout Hahn’s story, which pays tribute to its source material while maintaining a quality of emotional rawness and originality. Ages 10–12.
